Student Newspapers

First published in 1923, the Watchtower was a weekly newspaper published by advanced Journalism students.  Its purpose was to “bring to the student body and alumnae all of the active news of the campus, alumnae notes and other features of interest to its readers, as a whole.” (Wesleyan College Catalogue, 1923-1924 p. 125).  Over the years the paper has been named: The Watchtower, Town & Country, Times & Chimes, Times & Challenge, The Pioneer, and The Wesleyan Word.  Students often used the newspaper to express themselves. They frequently talked about world and local events, they debated hot social issues, and used the pages to express their feelings about what was happening on campus. The articles in the paper were often a form of advocacy for students who wanted change on campus and in the community.
